Ageing Hands

The skin on the back of our hands is a give-away when it comes to age; this is because they are open to the weather and environment just like our face and neck. As we age, our skin thins and its structure and function eventually become impaired, which is especially noticeable on the hands. Although our hands are generally the first place to show the ravages of time, they are sadly often neglected. Wrinkles, sunspots, loss of fat and thinning skin are often the result of years of aggressive treatment and sun damage.

During your consultation we will advise you on the best solution for you in regard to how many sessions you need.

Technology that has been proven to deliver amazing results is the HFIU for hands, we also offer a range of other treatments for ageing hands such as laser and Ultherapy. The treatment is a form of collagen induction therapy where a series of needles penetrate the skin causing thousands of micro-injures. The procedure leads to increased collagen production, which effectively repairs scars, reduces discolouration and renews tired looking skin. We also offer Derma pen for hands rejuvenation which will give you great results to include tightening of the skin, reduce sun damage, improvement in skin tone, and a general vibrant look. 4-6 treatments are required at an interval of 4 weeks apart.

Limiting sun exposure as a child and young adult will decreases the chances of aged hands. Using SPF protection on the hands will not only keep them moisturised and nourished but will protect them from harmful sun exposure. At home, using a dish-washing detergent with moisturiser while cleaning will prevent damage to the skin. Applying daily moisturiser for the hands is important to keep the skin hydrated.

Visible signs of ageing to the hand vary. Pigmentation on the back of the hands (age spots) is caused by UV damage. Lack of hydration and the depletion of collagen can also lead to signs of the natural ageing process such as to dry or discoloured skin and fine lines.

UV damage slows down our cellular regeneration leading to damage or alteration to the cells’ DNA. This results in sun blemishes and acceleration of the ageing process to the hands.

A lack of internal hydration (water) and external hydration (moisturisers) leads to a loss of  vital lipids which the skin needs to stay moist and supple. The delicate hand skin starts to look thinner and lacks that youthful looking plumpness.

As you get older, the skin usually shows the strongest signs of ageing, one of these are age spots. If you feel you are looking older than you should, ageing prematurely or just want to reverse some of the signs of ageing, then tackling age spots can be a good place to start.

What are Age Spots?

Age spots are small dark patches on the skin, they are also known as liver spots or technically as solar lentigines. They vary in size and location but are usually found on the face, neck, shoulders and hands.

What Causes Age Spots?

Age spots are in fact not caused by ageing at all but rather are one of the symptoms of sun damage. They commonly appear later in life, due to the amount of damage caused to the skin, by accumulation of excessive sun exposure.

Special cells called melanocytes generate colour using melanin. When exposed to the sun they react, and this is what gives us such things as a tan or freckles.

If the skin is exposed to excessive quantities of sun, it can damage the melanocyte cells, causing uneven melanin production, one of the effects of this damage is age spots, caused by excess melanin in one small patch of skin.

How We Can Help:

Laser treatment and IPL are both great non-surgical method for addressing age-spots. They are non-invasive and can improve the appearance of the skin in just a few treatments; simultaneously working on age spots and any uneven skin tone.

The PicoWay Resolve laser treats age spots by firing ultrashort (picosecond – one trillionth of a second) pulses into the age spots. These pulses shatter the excess melanin into very minute particles. The body then eliminates these particles using its natural processes. Simultaneously it helps to stimulate collagen production, thereby giving your skin a natural boost.

IPL fires out a broad spectrum of light that is precisely calibrated to hit the age spots as well as deep into the inner layers of skin. It damages the cells in the age spots, and the body’s natural processes will work to carry away these damaged cells and replace them with fresh healthier skin, while hitting the inner layer of your skin stimulates these cells to create more collagen.

We’re pleased to be able to offer both methods of treating age spots. At your initial consultation, the technician will discuss with you, which treatment plan is best and answer any questions you have.
